I feel it is an enormous privilege to be a part of ‘Made in Canterbury’ and very exciting. I usually sell my work at various craft fairs, which can be a very expensive and disappointing business, but not always. I have a regular stall at the Farmers Market at the Goods Shed in Station Road West, Canterbury, on the third Sunday of the month and a permanent display of my work at Sam’s Garage, Simmonds Road, Canterbury CT1 3RA.

I started to learn pottery at Canterbury Adult Studies and was lucky to have Alex Adam as a tutor. In 1994, with Alex’s support and advice, I set up the Dairy Pottery at Adisham with Julie Smith and we had 10 great years working together. Julie and I attended both John Solly’s and Phil Rogers’ courses, the ‘Wheel Conference’ in the Forest of Dean, the International Ceramics Conference at Aberystwyth and various Master Days trying to learn as much as we could. I am a member of the Kent Potters Association and now have a workshop in the garden at home in Canterbury.

I make stoneware pottery, fired to 1280C in a gas kiln, creating a reduction atmosphere which develops the oxides in the glazes. Because stoneware is very robust and therefore suitable for everyday use, I get great pleasure in making simple functional pots, both plain and decorated. All my work can be put in the oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher.
