Fran Flanagan Doll Maker - 'Canterbury Belles' |

I have always sewn, from necessity when younger (it was cheaper then to make your own clothes!) but always with delight. I like doll-making, and over the years many friends and family members have received my hand-made dolls as gifts. But it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I started to take this intermittent pleasure more seriously.
I now make a range of “little girl” dolls, inspired by children’s books and memories of my own childhood. The dolls stand about 14 inches high and are made from calico and are stuffed with polyester fibre. They have a painted face and either wool or fur fabric hair. They are fairly labour-intensive as each one takes 3 or 4 days to make and dress.
I also make a “school-girl” range. This started with dressing dolls in my two granddaughters’ school uniforms as Christmas presents. Ruby’s delighted shriek of, “It’s a little Ruby!” when she opened the parcel, made my day.
